The race is being planned for Easter Weekend for all of the out of towners that maybe home for Easter. Come one call all. We will have the the 1 Mile Fun Walk too! Join Us. Don Davenport used the high tech equipment at Snow Hill Primary to read to the 2nd grade class about dental care. Snow Hill Rotary is asked each year to read in the morning to the students. This year we had 4 readers and 1 singer. Rotarian Gene Smith dazzles the students with singing all morning long during their music class. This is a great time for the students to learn about Rotary and a great time for the Rotarians to learn about the students. This year participants were Don Davenport, Pete Miller, Denny Garner, Gene Smith, James McLawhorn, and Mary Jo Nimmo.

Snow Hill Rotary accepted the Think Caribbean Challenge and Twining program offered by Zones 33-34 of Rotary Internationals last year. After putting in their applications, the Think Caribbean committee called and announced their twin program, Cayman Brac Rotary Club. This was an exciting announcement and immediately Snow Hill Rotary contacted the club. After a few introductory e-mails the clubs have now begun to work together on projects. On October 15, Snow Hill Rotary was visited by Rotarian from the Cayman Brac Rotary Club, Dr. Brain Enright. Dr. Enright is President of National Training Networks that happens to be headquartered in North Carolina. Dr. Engright talked to the group about his relationship with Rotary and how he came to live on Cayman Brac. Snow Hill Rotary and Cayman Brac have pledged to work together and begin to build the relationship of the Rotary pledge "Service Above Self". Pictured in the photo is the Snow Hill Rotary club holding gifts that Dr. Enright brought and on the far left is Dr. Enright. Cayman Brac is an island that lies about 88 miles northeast of Grand Cayman in the Caribbean Sea. Snow Hill and Cayman Brac Rotary are very excited about the ability to work together to achieve service. The only other club in the district that is currently twinned is the Rotary Club of New Bern, they are matched up with the Rotary Club of St. Thomas.

Selling Watermelons Can Be Fun!

This past summer Snow Hill Rotary with the help of farmer Russ Jones had a blast selling watermelons. The fund raiser a brain storm of Russ spanned about two weeks with Rotarian's selling watermelons to friends and family and also setting up for the famous beach traffic through Snow Hill.

The 2nd Annual Snow Hill Rotary Road Race "Run Your Bunny Off" was a great race! We had 51 Runners and 12 walkers enjoy the beautiful weather and ran the 3.1 miles (5K). Here are some photos from the race:

This second annual race is being held to promote Health and Weight Loss in the school age child. The race starts at the Greene County Museum in Downtown Snow Hill.

The registration fee is $20. On race day, the fee increases to $25. The entry fee includes a t-shirt - guaranteed to all those registered by April 8, after that date, t-shirts will be given out on a "first-come, first-served" basis.

Proceeds of the race will go towards Snow Hill Rotary Club to benefits many organizations in Greene County and Internationally through Rotary International.

The History of Snow Hill Rotary

Snow Hill Rotary Club

The Snow Hill Rotary Club was first organized in March 1925. There were 20 chartered members that made up the first club. The club terminated due to the effects of the great depression but the current Snow Hill Rotary Club was readmitted in November 1937. It has been a force for good in Snow Hill and Greene County during all of these years. The women of Calvary Methodist Church initially fed the club each week at the old American Legion Building on Harper Street, causing one member, Mrs. Ethel Durant Lassiter, to remark that the local Methodist Church was built primarily on the stomachs of the Snow Hill Rotarians.

The club has always been composed of leading civic minded businessmen, doctors, attorneys, educators, and farmers, in Snow Hill and the surrounding area. It was once said that no issue proposed by Snow Hill or Greene County officials ever passed, without the Snow Hill Rotary Club’s stamp of approval. Membership has ranged from 20 to 35 members over the years. In the earlier years of Rotary attendance was mandatory, if you missed more than three consecutive meetings you were dropped from membership. Snow Hill Rotary had members with several years of perfect attendance and one member, Dr. Gordon Smith , had more than 20 years of perfect attendance.

The club is the longtime sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 74. According to onetime scout master R. Ben Raeford, who joined Rotary in 1948, the Snow Hill Club obtained a charter for Troop 74 in 1950, and he became scoutmaster at that time. The charter had been surrendered by a previous sponsor. In addition to annual monetary gifts, just last year, the club presented the troop with a new covered trailer which the troop uses to haul supplies to camporees and other scouting events.

When Greene Central High School opened its doors, the Snow Hill Rotary Club raised funds to buy the first scoreboard for the foot ball field. In addition, the club has supported various little league teams in the county, helped to raise funds for the Rotary Cottage at Boys and Girls home in Lake Waccamaw, and has been an annual supporter of Rotary International’s attempt to abolish Polio throughout the world. The club is most proud of it annual scholarship presented to a college bound graduate of Greene Central High School. We are the annual sponsor for the Snow Hill Christmas parade and a Blood Drive in Greene County.

The club raises money to fund these efforts by sponsoring a pancake supper in the fall at Greene Central High School, selling tickets for $1000.00 giveaway, and just this year sponsored what the club hopes will be an annual officially sanctioned road race.

The Snow Hill Rotary Club has presented a number of Paul Harris fellowships to honor its members. This is the highest award the club can bestow upon a member. It is named in honor of Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris. The club has been presenting this award annually for a number of years.

Through the years, Rotary has had many homes: the American Legion Building, various school lunchrooms, Harry’s Cafe, Hillview Grill, Snow Hill IGA, and currently the Snow Hill City Club. Our meals have been consistently good, our fellowship unmatched, and our motivation to continue our charitable endeavors unquenchable. Membership in the Snow Hill Rotary club is not closed. We welcome new members, and invite civic minded men and women to express such an interest to any of our members.

Snow Hill Rotary Run for the Health of It

The first Snow Hill Rotary Run for the Health of It took place on March 22, 2008 in Downtown Snow Hill. Mark Fisher won the sprint to the finish of the 1st Annual Run for the Health of It in Snow Hill. The 25 year old Raleigh runner ran 18:24 just one second faster than 30 year old Edgar Bautista of Greenville.
The race for the womens's title was even closer. Summer Purcell 27, of Goldsboro and 13 year old Nancy O'Brien of Snow Hill finshished with identical times of 27:38. The event also featured a 1-Mile Walk that 12 people enjoyed. The weather was fantastic and the runners enjoyed the course. Here are some comments from runners:

"Great race yesterday!! thanks for putting it on. I really like these little races which usually tour the town and all its scenery."

"Thank you so much for the race saturday. I really enjoyed it. It was nice getting out and meeting new people. Hope this is an annual event. Also I would like to thank all those that volunteered it was nice to know that the streets where blocked so we didn't have to worry about being hit by cars."

A special thanks to the Snow Hill Fire Department, Snow Hill EMS and the Greene County Sherrif Department for keeping the racers safe! The proceeds from the race are going to fund the Clubs' various service projects.

Snow Hill Rotary receives District Simplified Grant

Connie Hill and Mary Jo Nimmo attended the District 7720 Ri Foundation Seminar on October 17 in Williamston where the awards for the District Simplified Grants were given. Snow Hill Rotary recieved their first ever District Grant to promote the March 22, 2007 5K Rotary "Run for the Health of It" Race.

Snow Hill Snow Hill Rotary 5K "Run for the Health of It" that is scheduled on March 22, 2007 will promote not only Rotary but a Healthier Greene County. Snow Hill Rotary looks forward to making this a great event!

Excellent Programs at Snow Hill Rotary

We Have had the pleasure of hearing several excellent programs at the Rotary meetings for the last couple of weeks. Sgt Thaxton presented his role as a pilot for the State Highway Patrol. Julie Harper shared what it is like to work as a Parole Officer and Judge Tim Finan, Assistant Governor Area 7, joined us to explain the NC Judicial system. Wow, what great knowledge we have gained about our county and state.

Pete Miller Recieves the Paul Harris Fellow for 2007

Pete Miller, a long standing Rotarian with Snow Hill Rotary was honored this year as a Paul Harris Fellow. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary in 1905. Every year the Snow Hill Rotary Club honors outstanding achievement by recognizing one of its members as a fellow. A donation was made in honor of Pete Miller to the Rotary Foundation. By supporting the Rotary Foundation, Snow Hill Rotary supports a wide range of humanitarian grants and educations programs.

Frank Norman Named Rotarian of the Year for 2007

Members of the Snow Hill Rotary Club have selected Frank Norman as the club’s 2007 Rotarian of the Year. Frank has been a member of the Snow Hill Rotary Club since for the past 11 years. He is on the board of the Senior Center and if very active in assisting those in need. Norman has served as the President of Snow Hill Rotary and Assistant Governor of District 7720 of Rotary International. Giving the award to Frank is Mary Jo Nimmo, past President of Snow Hill Rotary.

Percy Harrell Honored for 25 Years of Serivce to Snow Hill Boy Scout Troop

At a recent meeting, the Snow Hill Rotary Club honored Percy Harrell for 25 years of service to the Snow Hill Boy Scout Troop. Percy started his career in scouting in the late 1960’s as a Cub Scout. He soon moved up to Boy Scouts followed by the Explorer Scouts and was named as a member of the “Order of the Arrow”. Percy began his leadership roll assisting Scout Masters Larry Pate and Norman Lewis. When these leaders retired, Percy assumed the roll of Scout Master and maintained this position for a term of 25 years, the longest of any previous Snow Hill Troop Leader. During his tenure, he attended many summer camps, hiked & camped on Mt. Mitchell and canoed the Contentnea Creek waters all the way to New Bern. Harrell attended the East Carolina Council Jamboree and served as a staff member of the National Jamboree. As Scout Master, 16 scouts under his leadership earned their Eagle Scout Award. Also during his leadership, the current Snow Hill Scout Hut was built on land donated by his family. This building is one of the nicest facilities owed by any North Carolina Troop. After 25 years as Scout Master, Harrell just recently resumed the roll of Assistant Scout Master to the troop.

Sheriff Visits Rotary August 16, 2007

Major Doug Stocks and Sheriff Lemmie Smith presented the program Gangs in Greene County at the Rotary meeting. This presentation was very informative about the increased activity of formal and informal gangs in the county.

The District Governor Visit

Brad Sears our the 7720 District Governor attended the meeting this week with the message of Rotary Shares. Also in attendance was Tim Finan our Assistant Govenor for Area 7 and Govenor Brad's wife Rita. Prior to the meeting Nathan Smith and other Snow Hill Rotarians met with Govenor Brad to fill him in on the exciting year ahead

To be a Rotarian is an honorable designation and distinguished achievement for people who have a heart and mind for service to others. The Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self” is a noble ambition, but easier talked about than achieved.
As Governor, I challenge you to continue our tradition of making a positive difference some place to something or someone in need. Rotary offers each one of us an excellent avenue and opportunity to make our world a better place to live.
Let's share Rotary in service projects and gifts this year is my sincere appeal to each Rotarian in District 7720. In fact, why not “lead” the entire Zone 33 so others may sit up and take notice.
